Overview
Scotch College Adelaide, an independent South Australian P-12 school with over 1,000 students across two campuses, has been using Vivi since mid-2017 to bring teachers and students closer together and increase collaboration within the classroom.
The Challenge
For Scotch College, it was crucial to find a screen mirroring solution that didn’t require any HDMI cables, cords or adaptors to free-up teachers from the front of the classroom. They were also looking for a solution that would allow students to easily share their own screens with the rest of the class, whilst keeping teachers in control.
The Outcome
Benefit to teachers
Year 7 Home Group teacher, Ed McInnes, explains how the school uses Vivi for streamlining the delivery of content, “We use it as teachers to stream our screen onto the projector in front of the whole class. This means we don’t need to use cords and can walk around and be mobile, checking in on students as well as having something frozen on the board.”
Vivi has also helped create a more dynamic learning experience in the classroom with the help of Vivi’s “Video Announcements” feature, formerly known as “Live Broadcast.”
“We also use the broadcast feature to stream learning. We’ve had an event in the past, like a mini conference, where we’ve had the host stream their voice and their screen into five separate learning spaces,” said McInnes.
Benefits to students
In addition to many benefits to teachers, McInnes also admires how Vivi has increased student collaboration within the classroom. “We use Vivi as a collaboration tool. It means that students can pass on their learnings to others, and they don’t need to get up to plug in their computer to do that – they can do it from wherever they are in the learning space,” and therefore limiting disruptions.
According to Lawson, a tech-savvy student in McInnes’ 7D class, students feel empowered by Vivi.
“We use Vivi a fair bit in the classroom,” Lawson said. “It’s much easier than cables and HDMI cables. It’s super low latency, so videos don’t buffer. Sometimes HDMI cables don’t work and it’s a bit of a hassle because people don’t have adapters.
Lawson also admires how within a few clicks and with approval from the classroom teacher, students can easily share their screens from where they’re sitting, saving a lot of time trying to connect an array of different cables to his device.
“Vivi is really easy to use. A couple clicks and you’re connected. We have an upcoming assignment where everyone is going to share their work and Vivi will make it that much easier.”
